The Oscar Brouhaha

The title of this post is funny(yeah, even to me). The 2015 Academy Awards has come and gone along with all the noise and disturbances that comes with it.  But it does also come with controversies and that's what we want to look at here.

For starters, one will expect that an annual award that is been given out for the 87th time(that is for 87 years), will find a way to be seen as perfect and escape controversies but sadly, that's not the case.

One of the first of the controversies is that this years Oscars was predominantly a white affair. No wonder it gained social media reputation with the hashtag #OscarSoWhite.  For the third time since 1995, the 20 Academy Award acting nominations were only for white actors and actresses. The first was in 1998 and second was in 2011-Hmmmm, that's not all, every nominated best director, screenwriter, screenplay adapter and original score composer is a white man. Again, there is an inherent lack of female representation in the Oscars this year beyond the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories. Selma was directed by Ava DuVernay herself an African-American female.

And do we want to talk about major snubs? Selma which personally I thought would have at least 3 nominations-for Best actor(David Oyelowo and I don't say this because he has connections with Nigeria), Best director(Ava DuVernay) and Best picture. How about Foxcatcher? Just 2 nominations and the fact that it was also overlooked for Best Picture. We can go on and on.

Well, it was still a wonderful event, let's hope the 88th Academy Awards will adress the issues listed above. For the next week i'm gonna try and see all the movies nominated and see why they beat my favourite ones(especially Selma lol).

Pls, let's know how you feel. Which movie did you think will get a nomination that didn't? Pls leave your comments.
